AI Flies an F-16; Human Pilot Reduced to World's Most Alert Passenger
DARPA's VENOM program put an AI agent at the controls of a standard F-16 over Florida, while a safety pilot sat in the cockpit doing what the rest of us do when someone else drives: watching everything, touching nothing, ready to grab the wheel.
In July, over Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, an artificial intelligence flew an F-16 fighter jet. A human test pilot handled the takeoff, flipped a switch, and became something no fighter pilot has trained for: a passenger.
Not just any passenger. A passenger with a kill switch. Under DARPA and the Air Force’s VENOM program — Viper Experimentation and Next-generation Operations Model, an acronym that was absolutely reverse-engineered from the word “venom” — the safety pilot can toggle between human and AI control “with the flip of a switch,” which means the most advanced autonomy milestone in aviation history shipped with the same interface as a bedside lamp.
Credit where due: this is a genuine first, and the details matter more than the headline. AI has flown an F-16-shaped object before — the X-62A VISTA, a one-of-a-kind research aircraft, flew under AI control back in 2023 and even dogfought a human pilot in 2024. But VISTA was a bespoke lab plane, the aviation equivalent of a concept car that never touches a public road.
VENOM is different. The Air Force took six standard, operational F-16s and retrofitted them with an autonomy kit — hardware, software, instrumentation — without changing the jet’s core flight software. Brig. Gen. James “Fangs” Valpiani (the program manager, and yes, the man overseeing the robot fighter jets is named Fangs) put it plainly: the team “automated flight controls and sensors on a standard F-16 without changing the jet’s core software.”
In consumer terms: they didn’t build a self-driving car. They made a kit that turns your car self-driving. The Pentagon has invented CarPlay for air combat.
The test campaign has been characteristically methodical. Ground testing and simulation since 2024. Piloted safety-validation flights in June. First AI-controlled sortie in July, announced July 16 — with the human aboard throughout, monitoring, in what the program calls “human-on-the-loop.”
Test pilot Tim Stevens of the 40th Flight Test Squadron described getting the aircraft airborne as “a monumental milestone for a complex test program,” which is test-pilot dialect for an emotion. AFRL’s Terry Wilson said the capability has moved “out of simulation and into the sky,” a sentence that reads very differently depending on whether you build the software or fly commercial.
Let’s be precise, because the roundup headlines haven’t been: this was not an unmanned flight, not a dogfight, and not “fully autonomous” in the sci-fi sense. The pilot performed the takeoff before handing over. Nobody armed anything. The AI flew the jet the way a student driver takes the freeway — competently, supervised, with an instructor whose right hand never strays far from the controls.
What comes next is where the program stops being a curiosity and starts being doctrine. The VENOM jets become the testbed for DARPA’s follow-on Artificial Intelligence Reinforcements program — multi-ship flights, beyond-visual-range scenarios, different AI agents flying against and alongside each other — all feeding the Collaborative Combat Aircraft effort, the drone wingmen the Air Force wants flying beside crewed fighters.
Which means the July flight is best understood not as a stunt but as a driver’s ed graduation. The AI has its learner’s permit. The instructors are professionally impressed and personally uneasy. And somewhere at Eglin, a fighter pilot with a call sign and a thousand hours in type is filling out paperwork describing a sortie in which the aircraft flew beautifully and their own primary contribution was the takeoff, the landing, and remaining vigilant.
The Air Force calls this the future of air combat. The pilot’s union for this profession does not exist yet, but the grievance file is already being written, one flawless AI sortie at a time.
